Money and earnings

8 questions

How much will I earn a month working as a self-employed carrier?

At 12 000 km with a MAN 18.520 + Krone Profi-liner you are left with roughly 4 385 € a month after every cost — fuel, tolls, the Drivora fee and the rent on the rig. At 10 000 km it is 3 021 €, and at 13 000 km 5 068 €. This is the figure before tax and contributions. We prepare a no-obligation estimate on the routes you plan to run and the tractor you choose, before you sign anything.

How is my income calculated?

You are not paid a wage; you are paid freight for the transports you complete. The agreed costs come off it: revenue (1.33 €/km) − fuel (0.268 l/km × 1.41 €) − tolls (0.27 €/km) − the admin fee of 550 € − the rent on the rig = your result. The more kilometres, the higher the margin — the fixed costs spread over more of them. Every month you get a settlement with every line itemised.

What does it take to start working for yourself?

From 7 100 € plus load-securing kit. For a Ford F-MAX 500 with a Krone trailer that is the first month's rent upfront, 3 050 € excluding VAT, and a refundable deposit of 4 050 € (3 000 € for the tractor + 1 050 € for the trailer). With a different make the figure changes by the price list — the Ford is the lowest way in. You need no loan, no down payment and no working capital for fuel and tolls. The load-securing kit (straps, corners, bars, anti-slip mats) you buy yourself.

What do I pay Drivora?

One fee: 550 € a month excluding VAT. No commission on individual loads, no hidden deductions from the rate. The fee covers finding customers and negotiating rates, dispatch and planning your loads, invoicing customers, taking on the payment risk, the whole transport administration and support while you get started. It also includes a free T-Mobile SIM — unlimited calls and texts, 50 GB of data across the EU, unlimited data in the Czech Republic. Separately you pay only the vehicle rent from the price list.

Who pays for fuel, tolls and fines?

We provide the fuel card and the toll box — you do not pay these costs upfront out of your own pocket. They come off by set-off when the transport is settled, so you see them on the statement but you do not need cash of your own for them. Traffic fines are down to you as the driver of the vehicle.

When and how do I get paid?

By bank transfer to your business account. The payment term is 60 days from the point the complete transport documentation is submitted (CMR, delivery notes). We suggest keeping a reserve for the first two months until the cycle gets going.

What if the customer doesn’t pay?

Drivora carries the risk of unpaid invoices. We invoice, we chase and we write off — your remuneration does not depend on it. This is the main difference from going it alone, where one unpaid invoice stops your whole cash flow while the instalments and the costs carry on.

Who sets the freight rate?

We negotiate rates with the customers — volume gives us a bargaining position a single carrier does not have. The rate your income is calculated from is traceable in every settlement.

Tractor and equipment

9 questions

Do I have to have my own tractor?

You do not have to, but you can. Without your own equipment you rent the tractor and the trailer from us, with no loan, no down payment and no five-year lease — you take on no bank debt, put up no assets and carry no residual-value risk. With your own equipment you can bring a tractor or a trailer into the cooperation: your costs drop by that part of the rent and your monthly result is that much higher. You can bring just one half of the rig — your own trailer with our tractor, or the other way round. We prepare a calculation of both options in advance so you can see the difference in numbers.

Which tractors can I choose and what does the rent cost?

Prices are per month excluding VAT and the deposit is refundable. MAN 18.520 — rent 2 400 €, deposit 3 000 €. Mercedes-Benz Actros 480 — 2 550 € and 3 100 €. Volvo FH500 — 2 550 € and 3 100 €. Ford F-MAX 500 — 2 200 € and 3 000 €. Krone Profi-liner trailer — 850 € and 1 050 €. Iveco Daily 3.0 — 1 856 €, deposit by vehicle. A rig is a tractor plus a trailer; you choose the make, model, colour and equipment level from what is currently available.

What is included in the rent?

Scheduled servicing, the roadworthiness test, routine maintenance, tyres, comprehensive insurance, third-party liability insurance and a replacement vehicle if yours breaks down. None of it is your problem and none of it is billed separately — we arrange the service dates with you. The rent does not include fuel, tolls or fines.

How does the deposit work?

You pay it before taking the vehicle over and it is returned in full once the cooperation ends. It is used only to cover damage or unpaid obligations. The deposit is not a fee and not a down payment — it is security you get back.

Who pays for damage to the vehicle?

You are responsible for the vehicle as its user, but most ordinary damage is covered by the comprehensive insurance included in the rent. At worst you deal with the excess, not the whole repair.

What if the tractor breaks down on a run?

You report the fault to us and we handle the servicing and the tow. For the duration of the repair you get a replacement vehicle so you do not lose loads.

Do I pay rent while I’m not driving?

Rent is charged for the actual number of days you use the vehicle. After the first month you can return the tractor at any time — no penalties and no notice period.

Can I drive a van instead of a rig?

Yes. The Iveco Daily 3.0 (curtainside, 10 pallets) is 1 856 € a month including 12 000 km, and 0.07 €/km over the limit. Vans run on a different operating-cost arrangement — go through it with us beforehand.

What if I have my own tractor or trailer?

You can use it and cut your costs. You pay no rent on the part of the rig you bring — your own trailer saves you 850 € a month, your own tractor 2 200–2 550 € depending on the make. Your monthly result rises by that amount. You can bring just one half of the rig: your own trailer with our tractor, or the other way round. With your own equipment, though, you also take on everything the rent otherwise covers — servicing, the roadworthiness test, tyres, comprehensive insurance and third-party liability. The vehicle has to meet the technical and emissions requirements for international haulage; we go through its actual condition before the cooperation starts.

Paperwork, trade licence and tax

7 questions

Do I need a živnost? And what if I do not have one yet?

You do need a business licence — you act as an independent carrier, not as an employee. If you do not have a živnost yet, we help you set it up and handle all the paperwork; it is a standard part of getting started and can be done online.

Does the živnost have to be Czech?

No. You do, however, need the right to trade and to work legally in the Czech Republic. If you are unsure about your status (residence permit, a trade licence in another EU country), get in touch — we will go through your specific case.

Do I need a haulage concession or a Community licence?

No. The transports run under Drivora’s transport authorisation — you do not have to obtain a concession, a Community licence or proof of financial standing. That is one of the main barriers we remove for you.

Do I have to deal with bookkeeping and VAT?

You do not have to deal with it yourself. Either you use the flat-rate tax, or we arrange the bookkeeping for a monthly fee. Invoicing customers, recording costs and preparing the tax paperwork are on us — you get a clear settlement.

What documents do I have to provide?

Four things: two years of experience in international haulage with traceable references; a driver-card printout, which you get while you wait at a Czech POINT counter; a criminal-record extract, also while you wait at a Czech POINT counter; and the funds for the deposit, the first month’s rent and load-securing kit. If something is missing, say so — it can usually be sorted out.

How is the paperwork signed?

The whole entry process can be done online, from your phone if you like — registration, documents for signature and the contracts, all electronically. The only trip to a counter is for the Czech POINT extracts.

Do I have to arrange CMR insurance?

No. Liability insurance for the goods carried and insurance of the vehicle are both arranged within the cooperation.

Work, loads and the cooperation

12 questions

Will there be enough loads?

Yes. We find and plan the loads, as a rule a week ahead, so you can see your own workload and your expected income. You do not have to sit on freight exchanges hunting for cargo — that is the work your monthly fee pays for.

Where do you drive and how long am I away?

At the moment we run mainly the Czech Republic – Italy lane with a curtainside trailer. It is work with regular shippers and consignees — no pallet exchange, no night driving and no long list of loading and unloading points on one run. For a driver it is one of the calmer lanes in international haulage. You come back to Czechia regularly. The highest mileage, and therefore the highest income, comes from a weekend-out, weekend-home pattern: one weekend you stay on the road, the next you spend at home. The rig stands idle for as little time as possible and you get a predictable rhythm. Planning follows the mobility package, including the right to a regular return.

Who plans the routes?

Dispatch is ours. We plan routes so they make sense in terms of mileage and how loads follow one another — your result grows with the kilometres you drive, so our interest is the same as yours.

Can I turn down a load?

A confirmed load has to be completed — we have guaranteed it to the customer. If you want a break or to cut back your workload, say so in advance and we will pause assigning you loads.

How does utilisation work?

For the agreed period we plan your utilisation — which is precisely why we can guarantee loads, negotiate rates and carry the payment risk. The scope is always a matter for the specific contract; we go through it with you beforehand.

What if I fall ill or want to take time off?

You choose when you want to drive. A longer break or an extended weekend just needs to be reported in advance. For a long illness you can return the tractor — you pay rent only for the days you had it available.

Where do I park the tractor when I’m off?

Over a weekend or a short break you park wherever suits you — we do not tie you to the depot for parking the rig; you only have to comply with traffic law and local rules. We recommend a guarded car park: it lowers the risk of damage and of cargo theft. If you are planning a longer holiday and do not want to pay rent for days you are not driving, you can return the tractor and take a vehicle over again when you get back.

Can I drive as a two-person crew or bring a co-driver?

Yes, a two-person crew is possible. Bear in mind, though, that at higher mileages the rent on the rig also rises, because the vehicle depreciates faster. To be plain about it: economically it usually does not work out. Income does go up, but it is split between two people, so the average earnings per driver are lower than driving solo. The specific terms — the second driver’s standing, their vetting, and responsibility for the vehicle and the cargo — differ case by case, so they need to be discussed in person. Get in touch and we will go through your particular situation, including a calculation of both options.

I don’t speak Czech, I speak Russian or Ukrainian. Can I apply?

Yes. Our dispatchers speak other languages too, so you will be understood. You do, however, need a valid right to trade and to work legally in the Czech Republic — if you are unsure about your status, get in touch and we will go through it.

Can I end the cooperation at any time?

Yes. The cooperation is not tied to a long-term contract. After the first month you return the vehicle with no penalties and the deposit comes back to you.

How quickly can I start?

From signing up to your first load is usually around 20 calendar days: a no-obligation consultation → an income estimate on your routes → the živnost and the contract → paying the deposit and taking over the rig → your first scheduled load.

What is the difference between employment and Drivora?

An employee gets a fixed wage regardless of performance, drives the vehicle they are assigned, and has their schedule set by their employer. As an independent carrier you get the freight — the difference between it and the costs is yours. You choose the tractor, you influence when you drive, and a better month shows up in your result immediately. And you deal with none of the administration, the loads or the payment risk.
